In 1784 British administrators created the Asiatic Society of Bengal and started editing Sanskrit texts with the help of native Pandits. In 1804 Friedrich Schlegel commenced his study of the Sanskrit manuscripts in the French National Library in Paris. Within twenty short years, the study of Sanskrit by Europeans had undergone a profound shift. It was no longer necessary to be in India to tackle the subject; Germans took over the academic lead from the British; chairs of Indology were set up in most German universities, and German Indologists were even hired in Great-Britain and in India. Pascale Rabault-Feuerhahn's book retraces the intellectual and institutional history of Indology in 19th century Germany. It places it within a broad academic, political, and cultural context, while also looking at ist evolution in conjunction and confrontation with neighbouring disciplines, such as classical philology, Oriental languages, and theology. From the start of the period, which was also a formative moment for German Romanticism, knowledge of Sanskrit was instrumental in establishing the existence of an Indo-European family of languages and laying the basis for comparative grammar. This placed the question of the links between languages and peoples at the heart of Indological research and shed light upon the ambiguous status of India as an Eastern entity tied by language to the West. In particular German Indologists engaged in the study of the Vedas, the oldest and most sacred text of Indian antiquity, which they mostly envisaged as a key to a primeval Indo-European Age.

Liturgical papyri are prime witnesses to the history of liturgy and the religious and theological currents in late antique Egypt. Mihalyko offers the first extensive introduction to the liturgical papyri, facilitating the reader's access to them with a detailed inventory of edited manuscripts and an extensive discussion of their date and provenance. She also examines liturgical papyri as the first preserved liturgical manuscripts, describing their material features, the ways they were used, the early history of the liturgical books, and their languages. She reveals how liturgical texts were written down and transmitted and locates these important manuscripts in the book culture of late antique Egypt.

The contributions to this volume examine the emergence of ancient Jewish art from the interdisciplinary perspective of Art and Archaeology, Ancient Judaism and Rabbinics, Patristics and Church History. Daniele Pevarello analyzes the Sentences of Sextus, a second century collection of Greek aphorisms compiled by Sextus, an otherwise unknown Christian author. The specific character of Sextus' collection lies in the fact that the Sentences are a Christian rewriting of Hellenistic sayings, some of which are still preserved in pagan gnomologies and in Porphyry. Pevarello investigates the problem of continuity and discontinuity between the ascetic tendencies of the Christian compiler and aphorisms promoting self-control in his pagan sources. In particular, he shows how some aspects of the Stoic, Cynic, Platonic and Pythagorean moral traditions, such as sexual restraint, voluntary poverty, the practice of silence and of a secluded life were creatively combined with Sextus' ascetic agenda against the background of the biblical tradition. Drawing on this adoption of Hellenistic moral traditions, Pevarello shows how great a part the moral tradition of Greek paideia played in the shaping and development of self-restraint among early Christian ascetics.

The author provides the first complete English commentary on one of the most important texts of the history of religions in late antiquity: the so-called "Mithras Liturgy", a magic Graeco-Egyptian papyrus from the 4th century A.D., written from the inner perspective by an initiated devotee of the god Helios-Mithras-Aion and containing an esoteric ritual instruction for an ascension to and consultation with the god. In addition to an introduction into the history of research since Albrecht Dieterich's famous work "Eine Mithrasliturgie" (1903), the volume contains the Greek text and the English translation, an analysis of the literary composition, and a commentary establishing the text and contextualizing it in relation to Egyptian religion, Mithraism, hermeticism and gnosticism.
